however, of a somewhat scattered character, and its noisier processes cannot advantageously be carried on in close proximity to the main University buildings. A scheme is therefore being worked our, to which allusion bas already been made, for group- ing the principal engineering accommodation in a single, well-arranged building upon a site a few hundred yards distant, which there is reason believe can be made available. In successive portions of the building there would be housed prime movers, hydraulics, electrical plant and the proposed workshop, suitable lecture rooms and accessory buildings com- pleting the scheme. The adoption of the scheme in ita integrity would, of course, be dependent upon the general recognition, on the part of those interested in Engineering enterprises, of the need for a thoroughly well equipped school of British Engineering in China. The total cost of the proposed buildings, so far us can at present be estimated, would be in the neighbourhood of $500,000. The building of the workshop--aud possibly the transfer of the electrical department could be proceeded with in advance of the rest of the scheme.
